They drove back to the villa to pick up Pam, then had lunch at Le Moulin de Mougins in the hills. It was easily the best meal Spandau had ever had, and he calculated that the wine alone cost more than what he was earning in a week. He looked around and saw that if he tossed a nickel over his shoulder, a movie star would be picking it out of his soup. After the first bottle of wine, Anna began to relax. Spandau watched the relationship between Pam and Anna change as they became sisters again and Hollywood melted away for a while. They laughed and joked with each other, and Spandau imagined what it would have been like back in Texas, before all the fear and the inequality set in, and he realized how hard a situation it was for them both.
The three of them ate and drank away the early afternoon. At the end of the meal they were all jolly good pals, but Spandau knew it would tighten up again when the wine wore off. And indeed everything changed the moment they climbed back into the car. Anna became quiet and hardly said a word during the trip back to the villa, simply stared out the window. Pam fielded various e-mails on a mobile phone that allowed her to perform everything short of nuclear fusion. The meal had made Spandau sleepy and content. He wanted to lean back and close his eyes, but technically he was working, though at what was anybodyâs guess.
When they arrived back at the villa, Anna went up to her room without saying a word.
âIs she okay?â Spandau asked Pam.
âShe gets like this,â said Pam. âYouâll get used to it. The trick is to realize it has nothing to do with you. You just go about your business and hope it doesnât escalate.â
But it did escalate. An hour later, Spandau was sitting outside by the pool when he heard Anna yelling inside. He came rushing in and found her chewing out Pam, who stood there with her head down.
âI donât give a fuck,â Anna was saying. âItâs not up to you to filter my fucking calls, you got that?â
âI thought you were taking a nap. And anyway, filtering your calls is about sixty percent of my job.â
Anna looked over at Spandau. âWhat the hell do you want?â
âI thought war had broken out. You okay?â
âNo thanks to you. You sit out there lounging in the sun with a goddamn book and my ass could have been kidnapped half a dozen times already.â
âI was sitting right below your window,â Spandau said to her. âUnless theyâre ninjas coming in by helicopter, I think weâre okay.â
âWhy donât you both do what youâre paid to do, smart-ass. Gee, wouldnât that be refreshing?â
She turned and went back upstairs. Spandau looked at Pam.
âIt happens,â said Pam.
